A rewriting of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, A DECLARATION OF INTERDEPENDENCE is a global-participatory film from the team behind CONNECTED. With music by Moby and directed by Tiffany Shlain, it is an exhilarating montage of user-generated videos and graphics, a global mash-up demonstrating the vast potential of creative collaboration in the 21st century. A DECLARATION OF INTERDEPENDENCE is the first film of a new short film series called Let it Ripple: Mobile Films for Global Change.

*Find out how to customize the film for your organization’s campaign or call to action here.
*Participate in the 100 Language Challenge here.

THE COLLABORATION CONTINUES | Please join us in being part of this project:

We will customize a version of A DECLARATION OF INTERDEPENDENCE for your non-profit organization for free. In the spirit of interdependence, instead of our “call to action” at the end of A DECLARATION OF INTERDEPENDENCE, we will replace it with your “call to action,” your logo, and your url to use for any event or campaign to help make the world a better place.

Here is an example of one organization’s call to action:

Declare your interdependence by…
donating your old cell phone to connect isolated people to medical care.

You can see a complete list of participating organizations and their calls to actions, as well as a sample video here.

To make the film truly global, we are asking volunteers from around the world to help translate the film into 100 languages. In the first 8 weeks, it has been volunteer-translated into 65 languages. To view the film in any of the 65 languages, click play and then click on the CC icon. The list of languages will appear with a red scroll bar on the top right. Join the translation team here.

Use the film to reach your community

  • Please complete the sentence "Declare your interdependence by..." following the above examples. The most effective calls to action are clear, concise and tangible. Please keep your call to action under 80 characters (including spaces). If you would like assistance coming up with a strong call to action, please don't hesitate to contact us.
  • Your logo should be high-resolution (300dpi). The background will be black, so it is ideal to have a black or transparent background.

A DECLARATION OF INTERDEPENDENCE premiered on Interdependence Day (9/12) 2011, simultaneously as Youtube’s featured homepage video and live at Interdependence Day events in New York City near Ground Zero. (Interdependence Day was started 9 years ago the day after 9/11 to celebrate our interdependence. It has taken place in places such as Paris, Casablanca, Mexico City, Brussels, Istanbul, and most recently in Berlin).

When in the course of human events, it becomes increasingly necessary
to recognize the fundamental qualities that connect us,

Then we must reevaluate the truths we hold to be self-evident:

That all humans are created equal and all are connected.

That we share the pursuits of life, liberty, happiness, food, water, shelter, safety, education, justice, and hopes for a better future.

That our collective knowledge, economy, technology, and environment are fundamentally interdependent.

That what will propel us forward as a species is our curiosity, our ability to forgive, our ability to appreciate, our courage,
and our desire to connect…

That these things we share will ultimately help us evolve to our fullest common potential.

And whereas we should take our problems seriously, we should never take ourselves too seriously.

Because another thing that connects us…is our ability to laugh…and our attempt to learn from our mistakes.

So that we can learn from the past, understand our place in the world, and use our collective knowledge to create a better future.

We can make the future whatever we want it to be.

So perhaps it’s time that we, as a species, who love to laugh, ask questions, and connect….do something radical and true.

For centuries, we have declared independence.

Perhaps it’s now time that we, as humans, declare our interdependence!

A DECLARATION OF INTERDEPENDENCE is a 4-minute global, crowdsourced film

that marks the first film of the series we are making called LET IT RIPPLE: MOBILE FILMS FOR GLOBAL CHANGE.
